My great grandmother, Jane Bates, was born in 1845. She was the daughter of
John & Ann Bates. John was the son of Thomas Bates and Elizabeth Cooper.
John & Ann had several other children: Anne, Charles, Elizabeth, Frederick,
George, Thomas, Caroline, Edward, Emma, Frederick Joe, Harriet and Mary Ann.
I have recently been in touch with a direct descendant of Caroline, who
married a Thomas Hughes.
The Jane (b 1797) you mentioned in your e-mail was John's sister and,
therefore, my Jane's aunt.
